Title: Bayanihan
What is Bayanihan? Being a born and raised Filipino-American, I honestly didn’t know of this term until three years ago when it was explained to me by a customer who was searching Bayanihan art from my shop. In his website, Jef Menguin best described Bayanihan as something, “that happens when people unite to help individuals and communities in need without expecting anything in return. Giving aid, without being asked, even to strangers, is a distinguishing mark of Filipino culture.”
I can't agree more. The Bayanihan spirit is within every Filipino, or in EVERY human being with a good conscious. As projected on this design, Bayanihan is typically represented by a large group of strong men who team up together to transfer a neighbor's bahay kubo (wooden home) from one location to another. Traditionally, this is done in the rural parts of the Philippines where typhoons, floods, or even the expansion of corporations take over the people's lands. It's a selfless and noble act for those involved but may I remind you that Bayaniyan is also something that occurs in smaller instances. For example, taking care of an elderly individual who you may/not be related to; providing food and supplies for the homeless; or utilizing our skills and talents for those who need assistance (i.g. medical workers who travel and volunteer their time to 3rd world countries and help communities that have no access or cannot afford healthcare).
