ABOUT THE MATRIARCH CHARACTER:
This next piece is called “The Matriarch”. I was inspired by my late Lola Nene, whom I considered as the matriarch on my father’s side of the family. For as long as I could remember, she was a very strong and outspoken woman. My Lolo was in the US Navy during, I believe, the 50s and 60s. The woman was amazing because she had to raise five children on her own, AND was well-known and involved with her community! I’m in no way a badass like my Lola but I feel her presence in me, especially when I have to face the frustrations of being a single mother. I feel her comfort and guidance.
Did you know that Matriarchy is very common in Philippine society? It has been deeply rooted, even during Spanish pre-colonization because women were considered equals to men. Therefore, they not only were the bearer of children but they had the right to become religious leaders (Babaylan), warriors, and inherit property. Again, this was pre-colonization!
The United States, is slowly but surely getting there. However, it will always and repeatedly struggle with gender inequality. Unfortunately, this country was born and lead by greedy, violent patriarchs. What can I say, except, it’s hard to teach an old dog new tricks.
